Achieve Success With the Right Mindset
Let’s play a little game of word association. What do you think of when you hear the word, “mindset?” I can imagine all the eye-rolling happening right now. This is somewhat of an old term that many people throw out when they are attempting to encourage someone to change their thought process. Your mindset is how you look at a particular subject, idea, or situation. And it can work for you or against you.

How Does Your Mindset Affect Your Business?

You see our mind is an incredible thing, it literally controls everything we do. It is designed to keep us safe in every aspect of our lives. So, when we decide to do something out of the norm or something that takes us out of our comfort zone, our brain will try to pull us back to what is safe and familiar. Every time you step into something that takes you out of your box your brain experiences growing pains and it will fight against what you are trying to accomplish to keep you safe.

The mind is a powerful tool. It controls our decision-making and is directly related to the fight or flight response. Doing something new, like starting a business, requires you to step outside of your comfort zone. When that happens the mind tries to take control and pull you back by planting thoughts of doubt and insecurity. What happens if you don’t make enough money? What if you can’t find any clients? You can’t afford not to have a paying job that pays the bills. You can see how this type of mindset can keep you from being successful.

When starting a photography business, or any type of business for that matter, you need to have the mindset of an entrepreneur or business owner. You are a boss now and have to start thinking like one. Running a business is a lot harder than working for someone else and there is a lot more responsibility. You will be making your own schedules, booking appts, and keeping track of payments and taxes. Your mindset here will either boost you into success or keep you from it.
How many new businesses survive the first year being in operation? According to the Small Business Association (SBA), only about 80% of businesses survive the first year. Of course, the odds get better the longer the business stays running. The reasons that these businesses fail are: not having a plan, lack of capital, underestimating the market, and poor management. Besides these finance-related reasons, another problem has to do with mindset.

The Good News is That You Can Change This Mindset

This is the biggest challenge when it comes to making changes in your life. It will not be easy and may require you to completely change the way you think about running a business. Here are a few things to keep in mind to be a successful business owner:
  • Recognize it will not happen overnight
  • It requires you to get off your behind and do something
  • You have no chance of being successful if you are not willing to put in the work
  • Running a business requires work, sometimes more than being an employee
Some things you can do to help change your mindset:
  • Find a mentor or join a community that provides education to better your skills like BOSS TOG
  • Look outside of your niche and see what other businesses in your area are doing to grow their companies
  • Read books or listen to audiobooks on personal development
The thing is, no one is as invested in your success as you are- NO ONE! If you want to have a successful photography business that is making a profit it’s up to you to make it happen. No one is going to hold your hand or do it for you. This is where that “Boss” mindset is going to help you. Bosses get things done! Workers take orders. Which one do you want to be?

Having a successful photography business is within your reach. You can achieve your dream of owning a business and being the captain of your own ship. The old saying, “You can do anything you put your mind to” is still true today. You can build a successful business and reap the rewards.
